Snakker du norsk? –

Do you speak Norwegian?

From my experience, I know that speaking a few words in the native language of the local people opens doors and puts a smile on the face.
It’s worth learning simple words like “hello”, “thank you”, “nice to meet you”, or “get lost”! Neh, it isn’t nice to talk like this to the locals 😉

Getting around Norway is easy with a well-established public transport system and a large network of buses, ferries, trains, and planes.

Traveling by bus is also, an option especially for shorter distances. Different operators offer cheap bus tickets between the large cities in Norway. Bus information within the cities.

It is easy to explore the country by train, but it can take a long time due to distances. On the other hand, you will travel along some of the most beautiful railroads in the world.

While on the short trip the fastest way to travel between the south and north is by plane and it is very comfy and time-saving.

Traveling by car around the country is very comfortable, however, you should be aware of the speed limits which range from 10 km/h to 110 km/h.

The ultimate journey in Norway is by Hurtigruten, sailing from South to North along the coastal line.

Norwegian climate is characterized by mild to warm summers and cold polar winters. Visiting time depends on your preferences.

  • If you enjoy the snowy weather, cold long polar nights lit by the aurora, or you love winter sports, the period between October and April will be a good time to travel.
  • If you prefer warmer temperatures, long summer days, midnight sun, hiking in the beautiful nature, enjoying outdoor activities, or even swimming beyond the Arctic Circle, a good time to travel is between June and August.
In general, the best time to visit:

Southern Norway with Oslo and Bergen is from June to August. September can be an option, although the temperature drops slightly.

Central Norway with Trondheim and Lofoten from June to August. Lofoten is also spectacular in March.

The Far North region around the Tromsø, Lapland, and Kirkenes from mid-June to mid-August and December to February.

Svalbard with Longyearbyen from mid-June to mid-Aug and from December to February.

I recommend two publishers:

  • Lonely Planet for those who are looking for quick access to a bunch of useful tips and information.
  • Bradt Travel for those who would like to explore and get to know the place well before embarking on a journey.
  • Also, I strongly recommend local tourist offices for up-to-date information.
